"Silence and Affirmation" Online Viewing Room

Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles just launched an online viewing room of Hikari Shimoda's sold out exhibition, "Silence and Affirmation". The exhibition opened on July 11th and is currently on view until August 15th. Hikari gave fans a live walkthrough on instagram and took fan questions in English and Japanese. Check it on on the gallery's instagram @coreyhelfordgallery here.

During the walkthrough, Hikari shared: "There are various problems occurring in each country due to the coronavirus pandemic. Something that my art touches upon is this overall rise of anxiety. There’s not just anxiety about the virus, but also a growing sense of distrust in politics, relationships between people and problems like discrimination."

"It’s the same feeling I felt after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. My art has always reflected these themes of anxiety and loneliness and how we deal with it. My one suggestion for that is "to affirm without denying." By that, I mean, the best way to deal with our feelings is to affirm them first, rather than denying them."

Hikari's exhibition is sold out, but if you would like to get on the preview list for future exhibitions, please email [email protected].
